Now, everyone knows how much we love Big John here at GCF. If there’s ever been a golfer more chock-full of inner demons, we’ve never seen him. Yet, he’s one of the most accessible and likable guys on the tour (well, he’s surviving on exemptions right now). Even with all of his on-course and off-course troubles, his everyman style, grip it and rip it attitude, and general good nature make him a fan favorite all over the world. But even we here at GCF get exasperated by John’s antics at times. At the top of the list of our grievances with John is his album, My Life. You heard right – album, CD, collection of songs. John Daly made an album. Now, it’s been around for a while but some of you lucky folks may not have been aware of its existence. Well, now you know and you’ll never be the same again.
First off, a general disclaimer – it’s not that bad. But then again, the demo you cut with your garage band back in high school wasn’t that bad. The guy doing Buffet covers in the bar last Saturday night wasn’t that bad. But, it’s not that good. And guest stars Darius Rucker, Willie Nelson, and Johnny Lee are somewhat to blame. They’re enablers. They should have just taken the microphone out of John’s hands and backed slowly out of the studio.
Now there are vanity projects that don’t turn out too bad, and some sports figures actually have some talent or artistic leanings. John, however, should stick to his day job. Actually, John should work harder at his day job so we can see him playing golf more often come the weekend – hopefully in his shirt.
Well, hell, you read this far, you might as well go all the way and have a listen. John has some music samples on his site or try a video. Don’t take our word for it, you might even like his music. His personal take on All My Ex’s Live in Texas, reworded to be All My Ex’s Wear Rolexes, has some humorous, and true, moments.
Unfortunately for John, we’ll have to rate this effort a range ball. Toss it back in the shag bag, it’s not ready for prime time. I wouldn’t even break this one out on a water hole.
